Είναι από τους σημαντικότερους συνθέτες-τραγουδοποιούς που υπάρχουν αυτή τη στιγμή εν ζωή. Γεννήθηκε στην Manitoba του Καναδά το 1945 από όπου και ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του δημιουργώντας το πρώτο του group σε ηλικία 15 ετών με το όνομα Jades, διασκευάζοντας instrumental κομμάτια αγαπημένων του συγκροτημάτων. 

Το 1966 μετακομίζει στο Los Angeles, όπου γίνεται μέλος των Buffalo Springfield και αργότερα προσθέτει το όνομα του στους θρυλικούς Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young με τους οποίους εμφανίζεται και στο φεστιβάλ του Woodstock το 1969.

 Από το 1970 ξεκινά σόλο καριέρα συνεργαζόμενος με το συγκρότημα των Crazy Horse οι οποίοι από τότε είναι και η επίσημη μπάντα του για τα επόμενα χρόνια. Αν και μόνιμος κάτοικος της Καλιφόρνιας, ο Young δεν έγινε ποτέ Αμερικανός υπήκοος. Είναι επιληπτικός και το 2005 διαγνώστηκε με εγκεφαλικό ανεύρυσμα, το οποίο αντιμετωπίστηκε με επιτυχία με χειρουργική επέμβαση. 

Έχει τιμηθεί με πολλά βραβεία και το περιοδικό Rolling Stone τον έχει κατατάξει μεταξύ των εκατό καλύτερων καλλιτεχνών όλων των εποχών. Μέσα σε 50 χρόνια έχει κυκλοφορήσει περίπου 60 δίσκους και τροφοδοτεί τα αυτιά μας με μουσική στην οποία ακόμα και ο Bob Dylan υποκλίνεται. Ας μην μιλήσουμε καλύτερα για την επιρροή του στα σύγχρονα groups γιατί εκεί θα χάσουμε το μέτρημα.

Ανήσυχο πνεύμα και πολυπράγμων μουσικός ο Neil Young απέδειξε για άλλη μια φορά φέτος, με την κυκλοφορία του Le Noise, ότι το ταλέντο του είναι αστείρευτο. Λίγοι μουσικοί πλέον μπορούν να ηχογραφήσουν ένα solo δίσκο μόνο με μια κιθάρα και τα εσώψυχα τους σε κοινή θέα και το αποτέλεσμά να είναι συγκλονιστικό.
